Salem County Churches
Salem County’s religious history is deeply rooted in its early settlement. Quakers were among the first to establish a presence, with their first meetinghouse and cemetery dating back to 1681 in Salem.
Other Protestant denominations soon followed, reflecting the diverse origins of the early settlers. St. John’s Episcopal Church, founded in 1722, and Emanuel Lutheran Church, established in 1726, are among the oldest congregations. Later, Catholic and African Methodist Episcopal (AME) churches emerged, with Mt. Pisgah AME Church being one of the nation’s earliest. These historic churches stand as testaments to the county’s enduring spiritual heritage.
